What makes a professional podcast?
As you look over the two boxes of attributes, you can see very clearly that you want to produce a high quality podcast for your listeners. If you fail to do this, your show will suffer. Is it difficult to produce a good podcast? No, it’s time consuming and takes lots of expensive software plus “know how.“ That is why I do all of that for you. You just add the subject matter expertise and you have a great show!
Consumers of podcasts are getting more “picky” these days as more and more podcasts are coming on the Internet. As such, you should want your podcasts to be a “joy” to watch or listen to, so podcast consumers will prefer your podcasts over those of your competition. You want to pay attention to the quality of your podcasts as they reflect on you, your company, and/or your services. Make no mistake about it, even if you don’t do video, people can tell a lot from listening to a podcast!
Again, if you do video podcasts, you can re-cut those podcast clips for use in other productions. If you do, I’m sure you will agree that the higher quality of your video production the better. Oh, while on that note, do realize that if you are serving your videos on the web, don’t go to the expense of HD or the like. Once you compress the original video for serving on the web, you have lost all that you might have gained from HD productions.
While we are on the topic of “good shows”, I should discuss what makes a good podcast and what doesn’t! I’m not talking about subject matter here, rather, I’m talking about the finished production of a podcast. Let me show you a list of the things that don’t make for a good podcast and those that do!
Bad Podcasts have:
1) A podcast with a "hum" in the background.
2) Where the voice is too low to hear.
3) Background noises like water running, kids playing, phones ringing, or dogs barking.
4) No lead-in or no lead-out music.
5) Poor video quality.
6) Jerky video.
7) Video with stuff happening in the background (unless you shoot in an active venue).
8) Audio with lots of “ah’s” or “ok’s”.
9) Audio with lots of mistakes in the voice over, like “oh, I didn't mean that, what I meant to say…”
10) Audio with using the wrong words.
11) Audio with curse words.
12) Only one video format.
Good Podcasts have:
1) Has good quality Audio or Video.
2) Has video float overs to illustrate and accent the video presentation.
3) Intro music and good exit music.
4) Credits for the production.
5) No hum or distracting background movements.
6) Good quality video compression for various formats (viewing preferences).
7) Always converted video for
viewing on mobile devices (flash video and MP4 as a minimum).
Good quality podcasts are a must these days!
