How long will it take before I see my ROI?

First, she wanted to rise above the noise of her 200 attorney firm, to be seen as a person who “pushed” their brand out onto the Internet.  She wanted to make a difference for her firm and to get it noticed.  Well, I won’t steal the thunder from the success article but, needless to say, she did reach her first ROI goal.  She likes to consider or redefine ROI as “Results on Investment”.  This is a new definition produced by a “Podcast Diva”, but it shows that ROI is being looked at in a different light.

Usually ROI is “return on investment”.  Podcasting can mean many things to many different people.  Take, for example, my client Helene Wasserman; she had 3 types of measurable ROI to her podcast efforts.
ROI takes many different definitions for podcasters!

ROI can be different for each podcaster. That being said, there is always a way to measure ones success in podcasting.  It isn’t always about money either!  Don’t get me wrong, money is great, but there are other equally as, or maybe even more, important ROI points that podcasters should be concerned with!

For example, if you get your name known out of the Internet and people consume your podcasts, then it goes without much of a “leap of faith” that more opportunities will befall you.  Some of these might not even be on your radar scope, but can change your podcast efforts completely.  You might want to just sell books or items from a podcast.  You start podcasting and bringing listeners back to your website for E-book sales or the like. You find that you can make some money, but it isn’t anything to write home to mom about.  Then, someone suggests that you convert your listeners into paying customers on a monthly basis, let’s say $5 per month for a “premium” upgrade.  What is that?  Well, you bundle newsletters, special audio podcasts, E-Reports, or the like into a program.  You can even have a once a month “premium content club podcast” as a group using a web based software offered free from Talkshoe.com.  This new “twist” has just changed your whole ROI measurement system.

I have a friend who is doing just this exact conversion.  He has 10,000 email clients hanging on every email he sends. Convert 20% of those to $5 per month, hum… makes for a nice monthly income if you ask me!  I would definitely write home to mom about that sum of money!

ROI has very different meanings to many different podcasters, so don’t fall into the standard way of thinking about ROI.  Use the new web 2.0 media to accomplish your ROI goals, but understand that when you open up the scope of your ROI thinking, you will benefit greatly from it!
Her second ROI was to be recognized on the Internet as a “High profile employment law attorney.”   She hit that one, too, as the “Trinity” pushed her name everywhere.  So much so that the print media grabbed her for interviews and such, while it continued to help her “relevance” to search engines and the like.

Third, she wanted to develop more clients.   This happened, too, as one of her podcast “guests” referred her to a client.  The client listened to the podcast and was sold on her services.
