How long should my podcasts be?

That is a question I get frequently asked.  The right answer is that podcasts should be long enough to cover the topic you want to discuss.  For example, if you are talking on how to make bubble gum, that might be covered in a few minutes, but if you are talking about something political, that might take more time to get the salient points across.

Another thing to keep in mind is that audio can be listened to when your listeners are doing “other” activities: for example exercising, doing mindless tasks, and commuting.  Audio is great for these kinds of activities and should not be overlooked when you are preparing your show material. In California, the number of people who commute over 90 minutes per day to their job has doubled!  That might allow you to make much longer shows that could appeal to the long-distance commuter.  If you think about it, you might make shows that are advertised as great commuting material!

Once you get the idea of the types of listeners you have, you can “tailor” your material to their needs or desires. So, as your show grows, you can fine tune the length of your podcasts or offer podcasts for particular activities like commuting or exercising.  Suffice it to say, your podcasts should be long enough to cover the topic matter and to provide value to the listener.
