Should I do Audio or Video?
If you travel the web, you can find both audio and video podcasts. I get this question often. The right answer is both.
On the Internet, viral marketing of your podcasts happens when other websites grab your podcast to be on their site. Let’s face it: video is sexy. Other sites like video too, for example youtube.com or even mefeedia.com. The bottom line is that you should use both audio and video podcasts in your podcast strategy. Video is sexy and has long legs on the Internet. Audio can be easily transported and consumed, but doesn’t carry the impact on the web. Remember, the right answer is both!
Audio podcasting is intimate by nature and can travel to mobile locations for consumption, very easily. For example, your audio programs can be listened to by your clients at their work, while they commute or travel, or even during their exercise time. Audio is easy to carry and be consumed when people are doing many other activities: like stuffing envelopes, mowing the lawn, or the like. “Mindless” jobs make for great opportunities to consume audio podcasts. There is only one drawback: audio podcasts lack legs! What do I mean by that?
A good podcaster should use both audio and video podcasting in their show.
One more thing to consider is that when you use video as a means to communicate, you can, many times, re-edit the video to make new podcasts or video clips that can be used in other media. For example, you can reuse video on the small business size CD ROMs or even put this video onto DVD’s for a product which could be delivered to a potential client.
Regardless of the question of which to use, the correct answer is to maximize your exposure, your viral marketing, and your impact. Use Both!
